Social Gradients In Binge Drinking And Abstaining In British Women

But the reverse is true of women with little education, whose binge drinking is more likely to take off in their 40s, shows the research. [click link for full article]

Liver transplant and hepatitis C in methadone maintenance therapy: a case report

Liver transplant and hepatitis C in methadone maintenance therapy: a case report

Methadone maintenance therapy for the treatment of opioid dependence continues to carry a social stigma. Until recently, patients on methadone were not considered for liver transplantation. We describe the first case of a patient on methadone who received a liver transplant for end stage liver disease and was successfully treated for recurrent hepatitis C. More than five years post transplant and three years post viral clearance, the patient continues to do well and is stable on low-dose methadone. This case emphasizes the need to reconsider the non-evidence based policy adopted by transplant centers that require methadone maintenance therapy patients to stop methadone prior to consideration for transplant evaluation.

HIV seroprevalence among participants at a Supervised Injection Facility in Vancouver, Canada: implications for prevention, care and treatment

HIV seroprevalence among participants at a Supervised Injection Facility in Vancouver, Canada: implications for prevention, care and treatment

North Americas first government sanctioned medically supervised injection facility (SIF) was opened during September 2003 in Vancouver, Canada. This was in response to a large open public drug scene, high rates of HIV and hepatitis C transmission, fatal drug overdoses, and poor health outcomes among the citys injection drug users. Between December 2003 and April 2005, a representative sample of 1,035 SIF participants were enrolled in a prospective cohort that required completing an interviewer-administered questionnaire and providing a blood sample for HIV testing. HIV infection was detected in 170/1007 (17%) participants and was associated with Aboriginal ethnicity (adjusted Odds Ratio [aOR], 2.70, 95% Confidence Interval [95% CI], 1.84-3.97), a history of borrowing used needles/syringes (aOR, 2.0, 95% CI, 1.37-2.93), previous incarceration (aOR, 1.87, 95% CI, 1.11-3.14), and daily injection cocaine use (aOR, 1.42, 95% CI, 1.00-2.03). The SIF has attracted a large number of marginalized injection drug users and presents an excellent opportunity to enhance HIV prevention through education, the provision of sterile injecting equipment, and a supervised environment to self-inject. In addition, the SIF is an important point of contact for HIV positive individuals who may not be participating in HIV care and treatment.

Middle class cocaine use

Since the earliest days of the drugs panic there tends to have been a split standard. The types of drugs that are indulged in by the middle classes are seen as OK or almost healthy whilst working class pleasures are penalised. Cocaine is an aspirational and clean drug whilst crack is dirty and associated with disease and crime. Hence the reason that large numbers of people who buy organisc milk and fairtrade coffe buy a drug that at every stage of its production is soaked in death and misery. The Colombian Government is trying to make people realise that their little white line has huge consequence in perpetuating poverty, war and disease.

There is a link to the story below.
